Maddi Anjaneya Swamy Temple History
In the ancient Tretayugam, a rakshasa named Madvasura peacefully coexisted with Ravan. During the Rama-Ravana war, witnessing Anjaneya Swamy, he uttered “Hanuma” before passing away. In Dwaparayugam, he was reborn as Madvakudu, living in peace, but died during the Kurupandava war upon seeing Sri Anjaneyaswamy on Arjuna’s flag.
In Kaliyuga, reborn as Madvudu, he undertook a journey across the country and began intense meditation on Sri Anjaneyaswamy at Yerrakaluva banks. An elderly Madhava Maharshi, incapable of walking, was saved from falling into the river by a monkey, who also provided him with fruit daily.
Unaware of the monkey’s originality, the Maharshi, after days, realized it was Anjaneyaswamy and sought forgiveness. Anjaneya Swamy appeared, granting the Rishi’s wish to be with him always. The Rishi was converted into a Maddi Tree, with Anjaneya Swamy portrayed as an idol holding fruit and Gadha, fulfilling Madvasura’s desire.
Madvasura’s tapas on Yerrakaluva’s banks led to Anjaneya Swamy giving the boon of a permanent presence in the form of a Maddi tree, and the place became known as Sri Maddi Anjaneya Swami.
