About Feroz Shah Kotla Fort
Feroz Shah Kotla Fort is one of Delhi’s oldest landmarks, dating back to 1354 AD. It was built by Sultan Feroz Shah Tughlaq, who moved the capital from Tughlaqabad to Firozabad due to a water shortage in the former location. The fort was strategically constructed near the Yamuna River to resolve the water issue.
Inside the fort, visitors can explore beautiful gardens, impressive mosques, and the remnants of grand palaces. The fort’s grand entrance is marked by a large iron gate bearing the name of Sultan Feroz Shah. The fort’s towering walls reach up to 15 meters high, making it a formidable structure.
Although parts of the fort have crumbled over time, the stepwell—an ancient well with steps—is still well-preserved. One of the most fascinating features of the fort is the Ashokan Pillar, which was transported from Ambala to Delhi. Standing 13 meters tall, this pillar bears inscriptions from Emperor Ashoka, containing his teachings and edicts.
