When traveling domestically within India, carrying your identification documents is important. While a passport may not be necessary, having a government-issued photo ID is mandatory. This ID is needed for different purposes, including booking tickets, checking in at airports, and for security checks. Here is the list of some accepted forms of identification:

Aadhaar Card

The Aadhaar card, a unique identification card issued by the Government of India, is widely accepted for domestic travel. It has your biometric and demographic information.

Voter ID Card

Voter ID is issued by the Election Commission of India, the voter ID card acts as both an identity and address proof.

Driving License

A valid driving license is another generally accepted form of identification for domestic travel.

PAN Card

The Permanent Account Number (PAN) card issued by the Income Tax Department is also accepted.

Passport

Although having a passport is not a must to travel within India, if you do not have any other ID as proof, a passport is certainly a valid form of identification for domestic travel.

Student ID Card

For students, a valid student ID card issued by their educational institution can be used.

Each of these identification documents can be used to confirm the traveler’s identity and, in some cases, their address. The choice of ID you want to carry depends on your convenience and the specific requirements of the airline or transportation service you are choosing.

Airport Security and Identification

When flying within India, passengers must show a valid ID at different points in the airport. The process typically involves:

Ticket Booking

While booking a ticket online or at a counter, passengers need to provide an ID number for verification. The ID number provided for the ticket is booked in the correct name.

Check-In

At the check-in counter, passengers must present their ID along with the ticket. This enables airline staff to verify the identity of the passenger.

Security Check

Before entering the secure area of the airport, passengers must show their ID and boarding pass to security personnel. This step is important for keeping airport security.

Documents Needed when Traveling by Train and Other Modes of Transport

If you are traveling by train, the ID card needs are slightly different but still important. When booking a train ticket, you may not required to give your ID number, however, carrying an ID during the journey is needed. Train conductors and railway officials may see your ID to verify your ticket details. Accepted IDs for train travel include the same documents that I have listed above: an Aadhaar card, voter ID card, driving license, PAN card, and passport.

Other modes of transport, such as buses and taxis, typically have less strict identification requirements. However, carrying an ID is always advisable in case of random checks or for personal safety.

Traveling to Certain Regions in India

While traveling within India generally does not need a passport, there are certain regions where additional permits or identification might be required. These include:

Northeast India

Some areas in states like Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Mizoram need special permits for Indian citizens. These permits are known as the Inner Line Permits (ILPs).

Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir

Certain sensitive areas, especially near borders, may need special permits. You can avail them from local authorities or the district administration.

Protected Areas

Some parts of India, especially those near international borders or sensitive ecological zones, are set as protected areas. Visiting these regions needs permits, which can be received from the Ministry of Home Affairs or local government offices.
