The temple’s history intertwines with the life of the 17th-century saint composer Kancharla Gopanna, also known as Bhakta Ramadas. Gopanna, functioning as the Tahasildar of Bhadrachalam, reportedly used government funds to build the temple, leading to his imprisonment in Golconda. Legend has it that Lord Rama miraculously repaid the amount to the Sultan, securing Gopanna’s release. Renamed Bhadrachala Ramadasa, Gopanna went on to compose numerous songs in Telugu, praising Lord Rama.
Bhadrachalam and Vijayanagara are linked to the Ramayana, with the belief that Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana stayed at Parnasala, 35 km from Bhadrachalam. The temple stands at the spot where Rama is said to have crossed the Godavari River on his way to rescue Sita. Bhadra, the son of Meru and Menaka, is said to have committed penances for Rama at this location.
Bhadrachalam attracts devotees worldwide, situated in a hilly region surrounded by the Holy River Godavari. Its name, derived from Bhadragiri, represents the mountain of Bhadra, a boon child of Meru and Menaka. The shrine’s history reflects the significance of the Ramayana era, where Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana spent their vanavasa in the nearby Dandakaranya.
The temple’s inception is credited to Bhakta Ramadas, who, as Tahasildar, used revenue to fund the construction. Despite facing hardships, including imprisonment, Ramadas’s devotion led to divine interventions, such as Lord Rama guiding him to find the Sudarshana Chakra in the Godavari River.
The Golconda King Tanishah became a devotee of Rama, recognizing Ramadas’s devotion. After Rama and Laxmana repaid the temple construction amount, Tanishah took charge of the temple administration, showcasing communal harmony. The temple’s maintenance was funded through the income from Palwoncha paragana.
Tumu Narsimha Dasa, along with Varada Ramadasa, assumed control of the temple and documented daily rituals on inscribed pillars. The temple’s rich history, intertwined with devotion, miracles, and communal harmony, continues to attract pilgrims seeking the divine blessings of Lord Rama.
